The Statue of Unity is a monument erected in memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the leader of India’s freedom struggle. It is the tallest statue in the world. Its height is 182 meters. The Statue of Unity is located at Sadhubet, below the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada. It is located at Kevadiya Colony, 90 km from Vadodara.

Who was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel?

Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the Iron Man and Sardar in India, is from Karamsad village in the Kheda district of Gujarat. But he was born at his uncle’s house in Nadiad on 31st October 1875.

 

Vallabhbhai Patel was a lawyer by profession. He came in contact with Gandhiji during his advocacy business. Inspired by Gandhiji’s ideology, Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli joined the Satyagraha. He has since become known as Sardar. He was known as the Iron Man because of his strong will.

 

Vallabhbhai Patel made an important contribution to the freedom struggle of India. He then skillfully carried out the very important task of unification of independent India. He united 556 princely states of India and created a united India.

 

History of the Statue of Unity:

Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to the history of independent India is invaluable. It was very necessary to applaud his work. This work was started by Gujarat Lokladila Chief Minister Narendra Bhai Modi. At the beginning of his 10th year as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi announced the construction of this monument on October 7, 2010.

Various programs were carried out by the Gujarat government for the construction of the monument. Iron scrap was collected from farmers. Construction started on 31st October 2013 and was completed in October 2018. He was inaugurated by the 14th Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018 on the occasion of Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary.

Statue of Unity as a tourist destination:

The monument was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, and opened to the public on November 1, 2018. It still continues to develop various sections as a tourist destination.

The Statue of Unity is located near Kevadia Colony in Rajpipla in the Narmada district of Gujarat. It is located in Sadhubet below the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada. The Statue of Unity has located at a distance of 90 km from Vadodara and 200 km from Ahmedabad in South Gujarat. It is located 91 km east of Bharuch. It is 151 km northeast of Surat.
