Platybelodon, an ancestor of modern elephants, sported a bizarre jutting jaw consisting of widened tusks that resembled an enormous fleshy spork. While initially thought to be used for shoveling vegetation in aquatic environments, later studies suggested these specialized tusks may have functioned as Scyth-like weapons to slice through dense vegetation. These peculiar creatures roamed Miocene Asia, Africa, and North America, grasping branches with their trunks and cutting them away with their built-in scythes. Although soft tissues don’t fossilize easily, their fossils discovered near rivers have provided insight into their unique features.
